A new Web site called "ITAsoftware" simply asks you to enter the name of your hometown airport and your destination. You then type the dates of your departure and return, and press "enter."
Bingo! In 30 seconds (rarely more), a screen appears which, when scrolled, reveals hundreds of airfares and itineraries for your trip in ascending order of cost. They appear in a logical, unbiased progression, from the cheapest fares for early morning and late-night flights with stops en route to your destination, rising upwards in price for the better times and the nonstop flights.
