Instead of citing bargains for the three months to come, which we normally do in each issue of Budget Travel, we've limited ourselves to two and a half months (October 1 to December 15) in this current version of our "40 Best Bargain Vacations," eliminating the pre-Christmas and pre-New Year's period.

That's because the immediate run-up to Christmas and New Year's is high season and expensive to almost everywhere in travel, and though you may occasionally continue to enjoy low airfares and room rates on December 16, 17, 18, and 19, you can't extend your trip or your stay much longer than that and expect to travel at reasonable cost. Given those date restrictions, the bargains are phenomenal in the two-and-a-half-month period we've chosen. It's hard to find any travel location that's busy in November and early December, and the month of October does only slightly better in attracting tourism. ...
