In the March/April 2002 issue of Budget Travel, we discussed the unsettling fact that a great many so-called volunteer vacations actually cost more than commercial tour programs involving no work at all. And in that disturbing context, we nevertheless ferreted out some ten programs or organizations operating volunteer vacations that were "worthy of the name"-that is, dirt-cheap vacations on which you received free or nominally priced room and board and thus spent hardly anything.
