In a culture of $1,000-a-night condos, $600 boots, and $70 lift tickets, cheap ski lodging is something most of us with duct-taped gloves and hand-me-down parkas never thought possible. Hostels-common in Europe and Down Under-are also sprinkled across North America, and some happen to sit a snowball's throw from many of the continent's best ski resorts. The ski hostels in Canada tend to be especially close to the action and beautifully maintained, if occasionally plain.
I'm not going to lie to you. The majority of guests are young-typically under 35-and a few seem to be around 13 in terms of maturity. But every Canadian ski hostel sees its share of savvy older guests and families, and for good reason.
