And over the course of my childhood, we toured every western state except Alaska.
When I was about three years old, we went camping in northern California. One morning near Klamath, we got up early, left the campground, and came across signs for the Tour Thru Tree-a giant redwood with a tunnel carved into it. The attraction wasn't open yet. "Oh, good," my dad said.
"We don't have to pay." What he saved in money he lost in pride: We got stuck inside the tree.
A few years later, we were at Lake Trinity, also in California. The campground was hosting a square-dancing night. Although I liked square dancing as much as the next kid, perhaps more, I got nervous when a little girl came up and asked me if I'd be her partner. "I'm sorry," I said, "but I have a headache."
