We Don't Have an Agenda-Well, That's Not Exactly True

We don't generally rant about politics here at
Budget Travel, but get this: To help fund an expansion of its convention center, New York City is considering a new tax on hotel guests-$1.50 per room, per night. That's on top of the existing 13.625 percent hotel tax and a $2 per room, per night charge.
I live in Manhattan, so what do I care? I never stay in a hotel here. But that kind of thinking is exactly the problem: We believe travelers shouldn't have to pay for infrastructure that benefits locals. If you've rented a car, you've probably chipped in for improvements to the local airport, auditoriums, sports arenas, and convention centers.
