True Stories
Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel, September, 2004
This month's winner is Nancy Davis of Jonesboro, Ga. Her prize: a 10-day South African safari, courtesy of South African Airways Holidays.
Before I retired as a flight attendant, I had the privilege of flying to many wonderful destinations. When my friend's mother passed away, I decided to "adopt" her father, Bud. I sent him anonymous postcards from every city I visited, from Fresno to Frankfurt. It didn't take long for him, his mailman, and his neighbors to become intrigued. The charade went on for months before my friend revealed my identity. Still, I kept sending cards-over 125 in all. At 86, Bud loved traveling vicariously to places he'd only dreamed about. He kept every card, and after he died my friend gave them to me. My advice to road warriors everywhere: Adopt someone. You'll be all the richer for it.
