Happy anniversary! Georg and Hedwig renew their vows

Every four years, the Bavarian town of Landshut reenacts one of history's most lavish weddings-the 1475 nuptials of Georg, son of duke Ludwig the Rich, and Hedwig, a Polish princess, which cost today's equivalent of $15.5 million.
The three-week festival is Europe's biggest medieval pageant, with jousting competitions and burlesque performances. (Unfortunately, the Reed family in this month's Trip Coach will be leaving Bavaria before it starts.) Over 2,400 residents of Landshut volunteer to play maidservants, dukes, and everything in between. To stay true to history, they're required to ditch their eyeglasses and cigarettes, and grow out their hair. Rehearsals are up to six hours a week for the four months preceding the event.
