There are days when being a travel editor is like being a lottery winner—because I still feel lucky, and because family members want to horn in on my expense account. I say that with love: I’ve been fortunate, over the years, to have my parents join me on magazine-sponsored trips—my Mom to Kauai and Charleston, my dad to Norway.

Of course, there’s no such thing as a free ride. My mom recently told me that the first page she reads in BT is this one—to see if I’ve told yet another “funny” family story.
