KUWAIT CITY (AFP) — Sixteen Kuwaiti Shiite mourners returning from the Iraqi holy city of Karbala after attending the burial of a top cleric were killed in a road accident near Safwan, an official said.

"So far, 16 people have died. Several others are in critical condition," Sayyed Mohammad Baqer al-Muhri, head of the Shiite Clerics Congress in Kuwait, told AFP.

Muhri said the accident took place about 50 kilometers (32 miles) before the Safwan border post and ruled out any sabotage.

"The bus overturned after midnight. All indications show it was a road mishap. There was no attack or sabotage," he said.
