BAGHDAD (AFP) — A rocket-propelled grenade slammed into the second floor of the Italian embassy in Baghdad late Wednesday but failed to explode, Italian diplomats confirmed.
"An anti-tank rocket hit the embassy's second floor at 11:30 pm (2030 GMT), causing no casualties but some material damage," the embassy's charge d'affaires, Gian Ludovico de Montero, told reporters Thursday.
"The rocket was launched after an exchange of light weapons fire coming from Al-Maghreb street," just outside the embassy, said Marina Catena, political adviser to Italy's special representative in Iraq.
The rocket left a small crater in the building's outer wall but did not explode, an AFP correspondent reported.
