N.Ireland voters urged to keep hardliners out of assembly

BELFAST (AFP) — A moderate party and analysts in Northern Ireland warned voters that failing to cast their ballots in the forthcoming election for a new provincial assembly could benefit hardliners and imperil the province's hard-won peace.
Fears of a slide back into inter-community bloodshed were highlighted by the announcement that 2,000 extra police had been called to guard Wednesday's poll due to fears of attacks.
The fresh concern about extremist paramilitaries launching attacks on election day followed the partial detonation of a bomb on Monday night at an army base in in the western town of Dungannon.
Additionally, there is speculation that cynicism about a stalled political process, coupled with freezing weather, could see many voters stay at home -- leaving the field clear for the more committed backers of hardline parties, both Catholic and Protestant.
