LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Veteran actress Elizabeth Taylor defended her long-time friend Michael Jackson against charges of child molestation as new details emerged about the pop star's accuser.

Taylor broke her silence about the charges in a statement released Sunday that insisted Jackson was being unfairly convicted by the media.

"I believe that Michael is absolutely innocent and that he will be vindicated," said the 71-year-old star.

"I am not giving any interviews because the press has behaved so abominably towards Michael. Their whole reaction is that he is guilty.

"I believed that the law was "innocent until proven guilty'. I know he is innocent and I hope they all eat crow."
