Israeli cabinet debates resumption of talks with Palestinians

JERUSALEM (AFP) — Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was hosting his first cabinet since the installation of a new Palestinian government where ministers were expected to map out their strategy for the resumption of contacts.

The Israeli government has said that it expects full intra-ministerial contacts, which have been officially frozen for nearly three months, to resume within days.

Sharon himself is expected to meet with his new Palestinian counterpart Ahmed Qorei shortly after he returns from a three-day visit to Italy which begins on Monday.

The meetings will see a new attempt to kickstart the internationally-backed "roadmap" for peace project which has ground to a halt in recent weeks amid the freeze in contacts and continuing violence on the ground....
