Will Ferrell's 'Elf' comedy takes top movie spot as Americans seek cheer

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — A seasonal movie about a sweet-toothed, man-size elf searching for his cynical father in New York starring Saturday Night Live funnyman Will Ferrell has shot to the top spot at the US box office, according to preliminary weekend figures.

Ticket sales for "Elf" are estimated to have rung-up some 27.2 million dollars as movie-audiences sought some early Christmas cheer this weekend, according to box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc.

Elf had opened in second place last weekend.

Coming in at second place this weekend was the opening of a new Russell Crowe vehicle, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," a ripping sea-yarn set during the Napoleonic wars.
