AUCKLAND (AFP) — All Blacks coach John Mitchell would have grounds for legal action against the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) if he fails to retain his job, a prominent rugby lawyer said as an unseemly battle for the position rumbled on in public.

Lawyer Wally Bain, a former NZRU official who has held positions on World Cup and Super 12 judicial committees, stepped into the fray as an article critical of Mitchell's coaching rival Graham Henry was distributed by a public relations company associated with Mitchell.

Comments by NZRU chief executive Chris Moller had "made life hell" for Mitchell, Bain told Radio Sport.
