South African lodge owner brushes off Woods' privacy lament

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, Dec 3 (AFP) — The owner of a luxury lodge in South Africa where Tiger Woods proposed to his Swedish girlfriend said Wednesday he was "very surprised" by the golfer's claims that his privacy had been exploited.
Adrian Gardiner, the founder of the Shamwari Game Reserve in the southeast, said it was general knowledge that Woods was staying at the lodge, and his engagement to Elin Nordegren was no secret.
Nordegren proudly showed off her engagement ring to staff and telephoned her parents from the lodge to tell them, he said.
"The news that he was staying at Shamwari was leaked by the PGA in America months ago. It was no secret that he was here. I protected him by not giving out dates of his arrival. Nobody got near him," Gardiner told the SAPA news agency.
