LONDON (AFP) — Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to apologise for fielding a team packed full of youngsters in the League Cup defeat by first division West Bromwich Albion.

It was the first time United had lost to non-Premiership opposition in a domestic competition for six years.

But Ferguson made it clear he would not reverse his long-established policy of using the tournament to give young or fringe players the chance of a first-team run out.

"Apart from the semi-final and final last season, we have always given young players a chance in this competition," Ferguson said.
