US offers "deepest sympathy" to Azerbaijan over Aliev death

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The United States offered its "deepest" sympathy" to Azerbaijan, hours after former President Heydar Aliyev died at an Ohio clinic.

"The United States extends its deepest sympathy to President Ilham Aliyev, to the Aliyev family, to the government of Azerbaijan, and to the people of Azerbaijan," said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher in a short statement.

"Funeral arrangements are being made by the family and the government of Azerbaijan."

Aliyev died at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio where he had been treated for heart failure and kidney problems.

Ilham Aliyev replaced his father as president two months ago.
