International appeal by Ferdinand must be spelt out by FA: CAS

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AFP) — The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said that English FA rules must spell out the possibility of an appeal to the international body over Rio Ferdinand's eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.

Otherwise the Football Association (FA) needs to conclude a one-off agreement to allow a challenge at international level, CAS Secretary-General Matthieu Reeb said.

"Officially, the case has not been submitted to CAS," Reeb told AFP Tuesday.

"For there to be an appeal to CAS, the rules must allow for it, or there must be an agreement between the parties, the Football Association (FA), the player and maybe even FIFA," he commented.
