RIYADH (AFP) — More than 50,000 cars crossed the King Fahd causeway from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain on New Year's Eve.

But the heavy traffic on the bridge linking the two Gulf Arab monarchies was due to the fact that Wednesday night marked the start of the Muslim weekend, not because it was New Year's Eve, Saudi newspaper Al-Yaum reported Thursday.

Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia, which follows the rigorous Wahhabi doctrine of Islam, deem New Year celebrations to be a "heresy," unlike Bahrain and many other Arab countries, which though Muslim traditionally celebrate the holiday.
