US New Year's Day peaceful under "high" terrorism alert

WASHINGTON (AFP) — New Year's Day was peaceful, with disruptions in international air travel caused by heightened security and fears of terrorism.
On Thursday, British Airways canceled one of its three daily passenger flights from London's Heathrow Airport to Washington Dulles International Airport.
Flight BA 223, carrying 180 passengers, was canceled "for security reasons based on advice from the government," a spokesman told AFP. Passengers on the same flight Wednesday were held for questioning on arrival.
And an Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Los Angeles was canceled on New Year's Eve, a Mexican official told AFP.
"Flight 490 was canceled for security reasons at the request of US authorities," the official said Thursday. The US Transportation Safety Administration gave no reason, although they asked for a passenger manifest.
