Los Angeles Zoo in security lockdown after chimp escapes -- again

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — More than 9,000 people were evacuated from Los Angeles Zoo after an "escape artist" chimpanzee fled her cage, forcing a tight security lockdown at the institution, officials said.

The monkey business erupted on Monday afternoon when a mischievous 15-year-old chimp called Gracie slipped out of her cage for the fourth time in five years and created havoc as she ran wild through the US zoo.

"We have one individual animal here that is an escape artist," said zoo director John Lewis.

"That is not an excuse but it's a fact for her. We have 1,400 other animals, none of which have been able to get out of this exhibit," he said, explaining the 35th escape of an animal at ...
