Dixville Notch casts first ballots in New Hampshire presidential primary

DIXVILLE NOTCH, United States (AFP) — The hamlet of Dixville Notch cast the first votes of the 2004 New Hampshire primary shortly after midnight Monday, and overwhelmingly chose retired General Wesley Clark in the Democratic presidential nomination race.

Although none of the town's 26 registered voters is a Democrat, independent voters gave Clark -- the only candidate present at the balloting -- a landslide victory with eight votes.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry received three votes; North Carolina Senator John Edwards, two votes, and Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean each received one vote.
