Resistance to joining the eurozone increases in Sweden

STOCKHOLM (AFP) — A majority of Swedes rejected swapping their krona for the euro last September, but a new poll shows that an even larger percentage would vote 'no' today.

In a referendum on September 14, 56.1 percent of Swedish voters came out against adopting the common currency, with only 41.8 percent in favour.

According to a report in Swedish tabloid Expressen Saturday, a poll conducted by Sifo Research & Consulting showed that if a new referendum were held today, 58 percent of Swedes would vote to keep their krona, and only 35 percent would be in favour of joining the eurozone.

The poll results could be bad news for Sweden's pro-euro political elite, which now appears even more out of touch with the majority of Swedish citizens.
