Turkish girl takes consequences for refusing to wed rapist: report

ANKARA (AFP) — A Turkish teenage girl has opted to see her father remain behind bars rather than go along with his request to marry a man who had raped her, a Turkish newspaper reported.
The 15-year-old girl who was not identified but comes from Adana in southern Turkey told her family that her 26-year-old boyfriend had raped her, the English language Turkish Daily News said.
To defend the family honour, the girl's father demanded she marry her attacker who reportedly agreed to wed the girl in a religious ceremony.
However, when the man refused a civil ceremony -- the only way for the marriage to be officially recognised in Turkey -- the father reported the rape to the authorities.
