Fortune ruled out for rest of season

MANCHESTER (AFP) — Quinton Fortune has been ruled out for the rest of Manchester United's season following knee surgery, the club's manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, confirmed.

The South African went under the knife earlier this week after twisting awkwardly during training last week and Ferguson admitted he would have to do without his first choice left-back for the rest of this campaign.

"Quinton is out for the rest of the season," the 62-year-old Scot confirmed after making light of his own health problems following the revelation that he had been fitted with a heart pacemaker.

The loss of Fortune leaves Ferguson with only three fit first-team defenders -- Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Phil Neville -- for Sunday's derby clash with Manchester City.
