Chirac looks to win over voters, but new cabinet greeted with skepticism

PARIS (AFP) — French President Jacques Chirac set out to regain voter confidence after last weekend's election debacle, but initial reaction to his reshuffled government line-up was highly sceptical.
Chirac was due to address the nation in a televised interview at 8:15 pm (1815 GMT), an appearance likely to emphasize a newfound personal investment in seeing through the center-right's program of social and economic reforms.
"Today, Jacques Chirac begins the second phase of his five-year term. It is important for him to give it the necessary momentum," said former prime minister Alain Juppe, leader of Chirac's Union for a Popular Majority (UMP).
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin took the reins of his third administration since May 2002, charged with erasing the memory of Sunday's regional wipe-out by the Socialists and winning back public support.
