Student suspected of making up costly abduction story

MADISON, Wisconsin (AFP) — US police indicated they believe a woman student whose disappearance sparked a major hunt made up a story that she was abducted at knifepoint.
The supposed kidnapping of 20-year-old University of Wisconsin student Audrey Seiler last Saturday drew nationwide media coverage after other recent disappearances.
She was found on Wednesday in a marsh close to her home, dehydrated and cold but otherwise unharmed.
Seiler said she had been abducted at knife-point and held hostage for four days but Madison assistant police chief Noble Wray said: "We do not believe there is a suspect at large."
Police also withdrew a composite picture of a suspect, citing "continuing inconsistencies" and the "lack of any evidence" to support Seiler's allegations.
