Mussa urges united Arab, world front over Israeli threats against Arafat

CAIRO (AFP) — Arab League chief Amr Mussa called for the Arab world and international community to unite against what he called "dangerous" Israeli threats to assassinate Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Mussa said he had telephoned Arafat to discuss the events in the occupied territories and the "dangerous threats of the Israeli prime minister" against him, said an Arab League statement sent to AFP.

The secretary general said "Arab and international action was necessary to stop the (situation) from deteriorating".

Israeli premier Ariel Sharon turned up the heat on Arafat on Friday, in one of his most threatening remarks to date.

Asked by the daily Haaretz whether Arafat and the head of the Lebanese fundamentalist militia Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, might be on Israel's list of leaders to assassinate, Sharon was unequivocal.
