Maradona improving while doctor claims ignorance over cocaine allegations

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) — The health of stricken Argentinian football idol Diego Maradona was said to be improving according to doctors who are treating him for a weak heart, high blood pressure and breathing difficulties.

However the 43-year-old was still hooked up to an artificial respirator and his personal doctor claimed ignorance about a report that tests had revealed traces of cocaine in his blood - a substance he became addicted to during a seven year spell, 1984-91, with Italian side Napoli.

"Maradona is making acceptable progress," read a statement from the hospital where he is being treated.

Alfredo Cahe, his longtime personal doctor, said he was unaware about a report on the national wire agency that cocaine had been discovered in his blood.
