Report shows Australians living longer, getting richer

SYDNEY, (AFP) — Australians are living longer and getting richer according to a snapshot of the country, which paints a brightening picture of living standards for non-indigenous nationals.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has spent the past two years sifting through mountains of data to deliver a report on whether life in the country is getting better.

The general conclusion is that life for many Australians has improved over the past decade but the most country's disadvantaged community -- Aborigines -- continue to struggle on all fronts.

Some 15 key areas of life were measured for changes between 1991 and 2001.
