LONDON (AFP) — Frank Lampard scored two second-half goals as Chelsea strengthened their advantage over Manchester United in the battle for second place in the Premiership and prepared in style for one of the biggest games in their history in midweek.

Their comprehensive destruction of Southampton and United's defeat at Blackburn means Claudio Ranieri's side are almost certain to go straight into the Champions League group phase next season at the expense of their Old Trafford rivals.

Lampard's double, an own-goal opener from 16-year-old Saints defender Martin Cranie and a late effort by substitute Glen Johnson means Chelsea go into Wednesday's Champions League semi-final second leg at home to Monaco in excellent shape.
