BOLTON, England (AFP) — A tearful Alan Smith admitted he would have to leave Leeds after the club's relegation from the Premiership - but the England striker held out the prospect of a return to Elland Road at some point in the future.

Speaking after a 4-1 defeat by Bolton which sealed his club's fate, Smith said he had no option but to quit the club he grew up supporting to further his international prospects.

"I'm not a first division player," Smith said. "I've got an international career to think about and hopefully the Leeds United fans understand that."
