Tearful Smith bids Leeds 'au revoir' not adieu

BOLTON, England (AFP) — A tearful Alan Smith admitted he would have to leave Leeds after the club's relegation from the Premiership - but the England striker held out the prospect of a return to Elland Road at some point in the future.
Speaking after a 4-1 defeat by Bolton which sealed his club's fate, Smith said he had no option but to quit the club he grew up supporting to further his international prospects.
"I'm not a first division player," Smith said. "I've got an international career to think about and hopefully the Leeds United fans understand that."
Smith is an idol of the Leeds fans and, although he had never disguised his intention to leave if the club were relegation, it was the forward's name they sang as their side crumbled at the Reebok stadium.
