Escaped US hostage in good condition and good spirits

BERLIN (AFP) — A US national taken hostage in Iraq who escaped his captors over the weekend is in good condition, good spirits and waiting to fly home to the United States, a military spokesman said.

"The doctor said that is he in good condition," said a spokesman at the Landstuhl medical facility in western Germany. "He is in good spirits, he is thankful that he is alive."

When asked when Hamill would be returning to the United States, the spokesman said: "There is no set date, but he is able to fly when they do decide to send him back to the States."

Hamill, 43, was seized on April 9 when the convoy he was travelling in as a driver was ambushed near Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad. He was caught on camera in the back of a car flanked by armed insurgents....
