TBILISI (AFP) — The renegade leader of Georgia's Adjara region was desperately clinging to power as opponents of his regime rallied in the streets and the country's president ordered the local militia to abandon him.

In scenes reminiscent of the "rose revolution" which swept a new generation of reformers to power in Georgia's capital last year, thousands of people gathered in Adjara's capital Batumi after nightfall to demand Aslan Abashidze resign.

Abashidze, whose family has ruled Adjara for decades, is a holdover from the old regime of Eduard Shevardnadze, who was ousted in last year's revolution, but his opponents said Abashidze's time had now come too.
