LONDON (AFP) — Britain's Countryside Agency, which rules on which areas should be open to "ramblers", began hearing a request by US pop music diva Madonna that part of her country estate in southwest England should be made off-limits.

Lawyers for Madonna, who is married to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie, will contest the right of walkers to cross part of the grounds of her Ashcombe House, an estate which once belonged to society photographer Cecil Beaton.

The dispute between Madonna and ramblers concerns 40 hectares (100 acres) of the 485 hectares (1,200 acres) of the property, valued at almost 13 million pounds (19 million euros, 23 million pounds). The hearing is taking place at a hotel in Shaftesbury in western England.
