UN observer shot dead in DR Congo

BUTARE, Rwanda (AFP) — A UN military observer was killed overnight by unidentified armed men near the eastern city of Bukavu in Democratic Republic of Congo, the UN mission to the country, MONUC, said.

"A MONUC military observer was shot dead overnight by armed men in uniforms who attacked observers stationed in Kalehe," some 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Bukavu, MONUC spokesman Sebastien Lapierre told AFP Saturday.

A second MONUC observer was missing after the attack, and UN troops had begun a search, he said.

The nationality of the two observers was not immediately known.
