BEIRUT (AFP) — Kuwaiti Energy Minister Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah said his country was ready to accept an increase in OPEC's oil production ceiling to 26 million barrels per day (bpd).

"If some members ask for 26, we don't mind," Sabah told reporters on arrival in Beirut where an extraordinary conference of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries is due to be held on Thursday.

The oil cartel has a current output quota of 23.5 million bpd.

But Sabah said "OPEC should not suspend its quota system, even if members are producing above the ceiling."

"We have to keep our quotas but increase our production, it will have the same goal," he said.
