Nicklaus downplays role of Ryder Cup captaincy

DUBLIN, United States (AFP) — Former United States Ryder Cup captain Jack Nicklaus downplayed the role the leader has upon the outcome of the matches after becoming the oldest third-round US PGA player in 25 years.

"It's a real honor to be captain (but) I don't think it affects the final result," Nicklaus said. "The only way the captain would affect the final result is adversely.

"The guys know how to play golf and generally they tell the captain who they want or don't want to play with."

Nicklaus compared the captaincy to being a glorified caddie.

"The only thing that's demanding is you're almost like a caddie - you have to show up, keep up and shut up," Nicklaus said. "You have to keep up with what's going on and keep your mouth shut until it's...
