Wie helps USA on way to Curtis Cup victory

FORMBY, England (AFP) — Fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie inspired the United States to retain their Curtis Cup title when they beat Great Britain and Ireland 10-8.

US team captain Martha Kirouac heaped praise on the Hawaii-born youngster, one of three schoolgirls in the side, for her impressive display of shot-making on the links course which attracted a record crowd.

"Her contribution was also to world-wide women's golf. The galleries got a wonderful glimpse of a girl with extraordinary talent," said Kirouac.

"She arrived here having not played these type of courses but had it all figured out and came out this afternoon firing double barrels. Every time I heard the radios they were saying she was knocking it stiff again."
