Former Vivendi chief Messier placed under investigation

PARIS (AFP) — Jean-Marie Messier, the former head of Vivendi Universal, was formally placed under investigation for fraud allegedly committed while he ran the French media group, his lawyer Olivier Metzner told AFP.

Magistrates Henri Pons and Rene Cros placed Messier, 47, under investigation for stock market manipulation and disseminating false information. He walked free after being held for 36 hours and questioned for more than four hours by the judges.

Messier, summoned by French financial police on Monday, joined four others in finding himself one step shy of formal charges. He was forbidden from contacting the four, as well as former colleagues and financial police officials, but was otherwise free to travel in France or abroad.
