McCartney crosses the generation divide at Britain's Glastonbury festival

PILTON, England (AFP) — Britain's huge Glastonbury rock festival was winding down following what organisers termed the best-ever year in its three-decade history, capped by a rapturously received show from Paul McCartney.

The ex-Beatle -- the first member of the band ever to appear at Glastonbury -- drew a vast crowd for the three-day event's main headline slot late on Saturday evening.

An estimated 50,000 people from virtually every age group watched the 62-year-old reel off a greatest hits set taken from his entire career, culminating in a mass singalong to "Yesterday", "Hey Jude" and "Let It Be".

Despite a day of rain on Saturday which left much of the festival a sea of mud, organiser Michael Eavis hailed the 2004 event as the most successful ever....
