Philanthropist Laurance Rockefeller dies at 94

NEW YORK (AFP) — Laurance Rockefeller, a prominent philanthropist and one of the grandsons US business legend John Rockefeller died at his home in Manhattan, The New York Times reported on its Web site. He was 94.

The newspaper said Rockefeller was a generous contributor to causes ranging from environmental protection to medical research, particularly the treatment of cancer.

The cause of death was pulmonary fibrosis, the report quotes a family spokesman as saying.

During his life, Rockefeller served on dozens of federal, state and local commissions on nature conservancy and advised every president since Dwight Eisenhower on policies of recreation, wilderness, preservation and ecology, according to The Times.
