13 injured as inmates riot in Colorado prison

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Up to 400 inmates went on the rampage in a prison in the western US state of Colorado, setting fire to their cell blocks in a riot that injured 13 inmates, officials said.

The revolt took place at the Crowley County Correctional Facility in Olney Springs, the State Corrections Department told AFP.

"About 100 to 150 started the riot and at the height of the disturbance there were 400 involved," said department spokeswoman Alison Morgan.

Some 13 inmates were injured in the uprising at the privately-run institution that holds 1,100 prisoners, she said.

At least one inmate suffered multiple stab wounds, according to the Rocky Mountain News newspaper.
