NEW YORK (AFP) — The traders and businessmen had deserted Wall Street when the US authorities announced a heightened alert on the street that has lived in the shadow of al-Qaeda ever since September 11.

The tourists strolling along the street that symbolises international capitalism gave little sign of the degree of danger that the US authorities say the New York financial district now faces from Osama bin Laden's militant group.

A young woman stood in front of the metal bars that block access to the street for cars to pose for a photograph.

"Whatever you see here has been here since 9/11," declared a security guard refering to the attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001 that left almost three thousand dead.
