NEW YORK (AFP) — US stocks pared their losses after a heightened terror alert for US financial institutions sparked an opening decline.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average recouped most of its early losses, and broke briefly into positive territory. The blue-chip index was down a fractional 0.73 point (0.01 percent) at 10,138.98 at 1510 GMT.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 12.15 points (0.64 percent) to 1,875.21 and the broad-market Standard and Poor's 500 dipped 1.35 points (0.12 percent) to 1,100.37.

The market action came after US officials over the weekend cited "unusually specific" evidence of possible al-Qaeda attacks against certain key financial sector buildings, including the New York Stock Exchange and the International Monetary Fund.
