Chechnya's Maskhadov claims deadly rebel attack in southern Russia

MOSCOW (AFP) — Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov has claimed responsibility for a bloody June raid into southern Russia in a statement that buried hopes of the five-year war in the tiny republic being resolved through political dialogue.

"I approved this operation," the www.kavkazcenter.com Internet site run by the rebels quoted Maskhadov as saying.

The attack on the republic of Ingushetia on Chechnya's western border killed at least 90 Russians -- most of them law enforcement officials. It prompted President Vladimir Putin to fire three senior generals who oversaw the conflict.

Maskhadov had been seen in the West as the one rebel leader with whom the Kremlin could hold peace talks. He was a democratically elected president and not closely linked...
