LONDON (AFP) ? European stock markets climbed in early trading in the wake of a steadier performance on Wall Street after oil prices tumbled overnight from record high points, dealers said.

The British FTSE 100 index rose 0.23 percent to 4,418.40 points, the German DAX 30 won 0.66 percent to 3,848.85 points and the French CAC 40 gained 0.89 percent to 3,639.74 points.

The DJ Euro Stoxx 50 index of leading eurozone shares advanced 0.52 percent to 2,698.29 points.

The euro stood at 1.2062 dollars.

A late-day decline in oil prices gave a modest lift to certain US stocks Wednesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average recouped early losses to edge ahead 0.06 percent at 10,126.51 points.
