TOKYO (AFP) ? Japanese telecom giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp (NTT) said that it posted fiscal first quarter to June net profit of 185.8 billion yen (1.7 billion dollars), with a sizeable contribution from its mobile phone unit.

NTT did not provide a year-ago comparative figure as it was the first time it had issued quarterly earnings results.

"All of our key subsidiaries, including NTT DoCoMo, have shown smooth progress in the first quarter in line with the projection," an NTT general manager, Tetsuya Obata, told reporters Thursday.
